Finn Silver @Billboard, Roppongi 24/01/12

The Dutch duo Finn Silver kicked off their mini tour of Japan on a cold wintry evening in Tokyo at Billboard with a two shows to showcase their album Crossing The Rubicon. Vocalist Fridolijn van Poll and producer/composer Mark Berman were backed by an enormously talented band, featuring brothers Ben and Gideon van Gelder on alto sax and keys respectively and a rhythm section consisting of bassist Neil Charles and drummer Richard Spaven, a line-up which pretty much guarantees an evening of musical delights .

Against a backdrop of dreamy visual sequences in similar hues and moods to the album's artwork the band kicked off the set with the single Roadtrip. From the moment the tune began, it was clear that it was going to be a special evening, with the songs sounding even better in a live setting. Mark Berman sat at the controls overseeing the samples and effects and the rhythm section kept everything really tight, allowing room for some great accompaniment and solo work from the van Gelder brothers. On top of this rich tapestry Fridolijn van Poll gave an exquisite vocal performance that had the audience rapt.

The band worked through most of the album and it was a delight from start to finish, with Sitting On Shore, Play With Fire and Kidnapped By Butterflies going down particularly well. A hugely enjoyable evening in which Finn Silver really took their music to another level. Simply magic.
